Even if you haven’t messed up with the file system, macOS may test your patience after upgrading it to a newer version. Many times, Mac upgrades have caused the system to crash, and the only door left open for you is to format and reinstall everything. Sounds like a lot of stress? It certainly is. Well, I cannot fix your broken Mac, but what I can do is to let you recover your files after you finished reinstalling your system as new.
I have found myself in a similar situation, and I had been looking for a permanent fix for my craziness. That’s what led me to EaseUS data recovery for Mac ($89.90). Of course, I didn’t buy it straight away reading the goodies on the website. I got my hands on the free trial to see if it actually works before I paid. Now that I have a full version of the application, and also have the first-hand experience with it, I assume myself to be qualified to write a review about it. Below are some of my findings, likes, and dislikes for the application.
EaseUS Data Recovery for Mac – Review
User Interface
I don’t know if it’s just me or a general perception; I prefer to pay for an app that has a neat and clean user interface. Even if any app has excellent functionality, but poor user interface, I keep myself away; unless there are no other options. Especially when it comes to data recovery software. That’s because losing data is already stressing me out; I don’t want myself to look here and there for the feature I need. Also, there are many data recovery software available; my options are not limited.
This is where EaseUS has hit the bullseye. The company claims to start recovering data in just three steps. Honestly, it took a little more than that the first time, but it was smooth. It had more than three steps the first time because you need to allow access to the app from System Preferences. The second time, it was done in three steps.
Besides that, there were no additional options that need technical knowledge for configurations. The app handles everything on its own, and within a minute, it started scanning my HDD. As long as the user interface is concerned, I’ll rate it nine out of ten. The only reason for not giving a perfect ten is because nothing is ever perfect!
Scanning the File System
I have a 500GB HDD on my Mac, and it showed me more than five hours to scan it thoroughly. This may sound way too much, but trust me when I say that I was delighted with the result.
It is my first-hand experience; the scan displayed me files that were deleted by my colleague who used this Mac before me. He left the office before one and a half year, and this Mac was formatted more than a couple of times since then.
The scan result proves the hard work put by the EaseUS team behind developing this application. The screenshots of the scan result are shown below:
Cloud storing option
After scanning is finished, you can select the files you wish to recover and then save them to current HDD or external storage. But if I were you, I would store them on the cloud so that I won’t find myself in a similar situation again. With EaseUS data recovery, you can do it right from the software. You won’t need to manually save files to Hard Drive and then upload them to the cloud.
Once you select the files to recover, click the drop-down icon beside the Recover button. Select Cloud storage from three available options – Google Drive, DropBox, or OneDrive and save your files securely.
Device compatibility
Everything’s good till now, but I wanted to take it a little further and test other claims made by the company. EaseUS claims to support multiple devices like iPod, HDD, Digital Camera, SD Card, etc. I backed up my SD card that had thousands of photos in cloud storage.
Next was to format it entirely and then try to recover all of them using the software. I wasn’t surprised when all my photos were displayed in the scan result, from where I can retrieve them back. In fact, not just images, it also showed me other apps specific data that I had before years on that SD card.
Below is the list of supported of devices for your reference:
- MacBook/iMac
- HDD
- SSD
- Memory Card
- USB Drive
- SD Card
- Digital Camera
- iPod, MP3, MP4
- Video player
- CF/XD/MMC card
- Camcorder
- Other storage media
Bootable recovery drive
Until now, we assumed that we made the mistake of deleting important files. But what if we were careful enough to protect them, but it was the macOS playing dirty? If your macOS has crashed and it doesn’t start, you have no option to take the backup of your data before formatting.
What if I tell you that with EaseUS there’s no need of formatting your Mac in the first place. The software has a feature to create a bootable drive. When your Mac crashes, you can boot from the drive and start the data recovery process and restore all corrupted files to their earlier state. Eventually, eliminating the need to format the drive.
This option comes in super handy for people who test different things on their Mac and often crashes it. If you buy this software, the first thing you need to do is to create a bootable drive and place it safely.
Smart Disk Monitoring
Hard Disk generally doesn’t crash that often, but if you carry a lot of sensitive data on it; it is recommended to keep a keen eye on the health of the hard drive. EaseUS has built-in Smart Disk Monitoring system that alerts you in real-time about any possible HDD failures. On top of that, it displays the HDD temperature on the status bar, so that you know how warm it is.
This feature gives you enough time to act on it and recover or backup data before it fails. I wasn’t personally able to test it because my HDD is in a pretty healthy state. But considering the results of previous tests, it is fair to assume that this feature will stand on its words.
Create Disk Image
We have checked how to recover deleted files. We also checked about HDD health and its precautions. On top of that, we are also prepared if the Mac crashes. Last and the best feature is to create a disk image of the current state of your Mac.
If you are planning to do something nasty with your Mac, make sure you create a disk image before doing so. Even if your Mac crashes later on, you have the replica of the system before it crashed. It makes it easier to recover everything exactly it was before.
All you’ll need to do is to install the macOS again, install the EaseUS software, and load the disk image to get things back to as they were.
Final Verdict
EaseUS Data Recovery has covered all possible scenarios to get your data back; at any cost. Not just that, they have made sure you have a pleasant experience using the application.
The proactiveness of the company is clearly visible when I noticed the “Contact Product Manager” option in the Preferences menu. That’s something rare. Every app does have a contact option, but that’s not that approachable.
In the end, money matters. Before you buy the Pro version at $106.14, you can try the same version for free. The free version allows you to recover 2GB of data. But you can see the entire scan result, same as Pro. This will give you an idea of whether you’ll be able to recover the files you are looking for.
For a limited period, you can get the app at a 50% discount.
Price: $89.90
